The carrying out of «Kharman holiday» or «Harvest holiday» was practiced by Turkmens from time immemorial. Harvest holiday was carried out after harvesting of grain and other agricultural products in the autumn. This holiday in the past was celebrates in such way. Members of agricultural community, who cultivated the land together (one community was formed byseveral groups consisting of 10-15 men) took some part оf common crop and sold it. Having sold grain, they bought a foodstuffs. They baked bread out of a flour of a new crop. The holiday was carried out in the village or at the cleared kharman. The Harvest holiday was usually carried out in the autumn. Peasants bought goods necessary for it on on shares and invited all the village. The people, who served at the holiday gave the guests porridge cooked of groats of a new crop in wooden dishes.
As a result of national selection, which have lasted for centuries, there have been got various kinds of cultural plants of unusual qualities. Wheat steady to Tejen lack of water; Sakarsky melon of «gulabi» breed, a local kind of cotton, white durra, fruit trees have been got by Turkmens as a result of their own selection. Melon is wealth and pride of the Turkmen people. The Turkmen land is a land of melon and grape. Now the wine-growing, which is profitable branch of agriculture is developed at up-to-date level.
At the prosperous epoch of the powerful state presented us by the honourable President, the big attention is given to development of various branches of agriculture and quality of agricultural production. At the prosperous epoch of the powerful state is also annually celebrated the Harvest holiday on last Sunday of November. It is a demonstration that the state attaches great value to the sphere of agriculture huge significance.
At the State museum of the State cultural centre of Turkmenistan was also organized an exhibition «Have a rich crop our native heath», devoted to harvest holiday. The exhibition is divided into three sections. In the first section are presented archaeological finds of ancient agricultural crops аnd medieval labour tools and articles, which are necessary in agriculture. The second part is devoted to the development of agriculture in Turkmenistan in 30-50-s of the ХХ century. In a photo of those years is represented selfless labour of rural working people. The final part is devoted to the achievements in agriculture at the period of Independence of our country. Here are exposed works of artists, carpets with a plot, five saddle bags with cotton adorned with the patterns of five provinces, sheaves of white wheat, jewellery composition embodying food abundance of Turkmen people.
