Wedding traditions of Turkmen people
For a long time Turkmen people celebrated holidays and significant dates as a solemn event. Every holiday had its peculiarities, which became deep-seated traditions step-by-step.
Wedding is considered to be the most significant event of our people. Many traditions connected with this holiday, have come up to now.
Turkmen wedding was always carried out in a big way, here took place races, wrestling, jump to get a kerchief, „ýüzük tapdy“ game (“find a ring”).
When we talk about ancient Turkmen wedding we imagine kejebe (palanquin). According to custom, the people who went for a bride, took her by camel, in palanquin. It was difficult to make a palanquin. Carpenters first made a dome for palanquin. They have used willow bent like uk (a long wooden bent pole). Entry of palanquin was on the camel's head side. It was rather big to accommodate the young bride and her sister-in-law. Inside of palanquin were laid carpets and the dome was adorned by a special roofing (kejebelik), made of carpet or cloth. A camel, which took the bride, was adorned by carpet products - kejebelik, duyehalyk, duyeboyunlyk, duyedyzlyk аnd a bridle with a plume. When was married a boy, there participated not only relatives and friends of the boy, but all the village as well. National singers (bahshy) sang their songs.
The camel was led by the junior brother or by somebody of relatives of the bridegroom. The bride was taken to a white yurta adorned by carpets and carpet products. After the bride was taken here, the guests were treated by national food – palaw, dograma, yarma.
At the State museum of the State cultural centre of Turkmenistan was carried out educational conference „Wedding traditions“and was organized an exhibition. Here were exposed museum values connected with Turkmen national wedding traditions: duyehalyk, duyedyzlyk, duyebashlyk, a bridle with a plume, ancient articles of everyday life, Turkmen national musical instruments, woman’s jewellery, modern jewellery compositions, works of Turkmen artists.
At the prosperous epoch of the powerful state weddings have a new, modern shade. Thanks to the care of the honourable President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov in Ashgabat, Mary, Balkanabat, Dashoguz and Turkmenabat were constructed Palaces of happiness for newlyweds.
